Deploying Azure Backup Server

Deploying Azure Backup Server

Hi Friends i am starting my testing on new features of Azure Backup like  Vmware backup 2016 system state back up. I am setting up my ABS (azure backup server). Azure backup Is pure hybird  backup solution for on-prem and Iaas systems.  keep in mind azure Backup Server does not back up to tape, nor does it integrate with System Center.

For New ABS featurs reffer below Link:

Choosing the Server

You can still have this server and azure (Iaas) or else you can install on-prem as well, To use Modern Backup Storage, you must run Backup Server v2 on Windows Server 2016. If you run Backup Server v2 on an earlier version of Windows Server, Azure Backup Server can't take advantage of Modern Backup Storage

Azure Backup Server is designed to run on a dedicated, single-purpose server. You cannot install Azure Backup Server on:+
  • A computer running as a domain controller
  • A computer on which the Application Server role is installed
  • A computer that is a System Center Operations Manager management server
  • A computer on which Exchange Server is running
  • A computer that is a node of a cluster
Ok now letz create a Recovery Vault.

Creating the Vault.

Log in to the Portal

Search recovery

Select Recovery Services vault

Select Add

Key in the a name for the vault (GLABABS)

Select the Subscription you want this vault

Select the Resource Group  new or a existing one

location what DC you want you Vault on.

Now we have Created the Vault  letz start configuring

Backup Configuration

In the Vault navigate to select Backup Infrastructure  in the general section select backup configuration .

On the Storge replication type geo-redundant storage or locally redundant storage.

Now that we have done  all the steps  letz creat the a backup goal

select he vault navigate to getting started  and select bakup

On the backup goals select where your workload is running in my case i have selected On-prem  all my testing is gonna be on-prem.

Than need to select all  we are gonna backup i am gonna test all selected below .

Click Ok to create the goal

The Prepare infrastructure blade will opens then click the Download links for Install Azure Backup Server and Download vault credentials. The vault credentials are needed to register the Azure Backup Server to the recovery services vault.

Download the Server from this link

Letz start downloading

Click next  on the Welcome wizard

Select the Location where to Extract and click next and on the Next window click Extract.

After extracting  click finish .

In the window Select Install Microsoft Azure Backup Server

On the Welcome window Click next to Continue

Select next on the prerequisite checks

Azure Backup Server requires SQL Server Standard; installation package comes bundled with the appropriate SQL Server binaries needed. You should pick the Install new Instance of SQL Server with this Setup and click the Check and Install button. Once the prerequisites are successfully installed, click Next.

Since my Checker failed ill need to fix all prerequisite .

you need to install .net 3.5 and .net 4.6

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53344

Note:
Azure Backup Server will not work with a remote SQL Server instance. The instance being used by Azure Backup Server needs to be local.

Now that i have made my sever ready  letz click next to continue

Now we need to select installation location i am going with the default since this is a test infra. please keep in note  scratch location is a requirement for back up to Azure. Ensure the scratch location is at least 5% of the data planned to be backed up to the cloud. For disk protection, separate disks need to be configured once the installation completes.

Refer link for storage pool: https://technet.microsoft.com/library/hh758075.aspx

Give astrong password for restricted local user accounts and click Next.

Select whether you want to use Microsoft Update to check for updates and click Next.

Review the Summary page and hit Install

While the installation progress wizard will promte you for the  Vault ID key that we downloaded and saved fro the Protal.
browse the location and import the key.

Key in the Decryrtion key and save location.

Wow now we have Completed the Setup Successfully.

Yon can see the ABS Server name in the Portal.

Check Connectivity from the ABS

Open Shell and try Get-DPMCloudConnection.
Out put has to be True as shown above.

if you connecting via firewall/proxy allow below links for Connectivety

  • *.Microsoft.com
  • *.WindowsAzure.com
  • *.microsoftonline.com
  • *.windows.net

First look of the ABS.

Now we have the Server ready  let Start  Configuring the Server.

first lets add storage

We will using storage spaces. This will  help if we want to expand  backup storage. This is a best practices for creating a volume. I have already created storge pool virtul Disk and Volumes has shown in the below image

Lets Add volumes to Backup Server storage

Open Azure backup server select Managment

Select Disk Storage and click Add

In the wizard select the Valume and click Add this through a warning message saying this volume will be formated before adding it to the pool
